The model for this shoot is Lill-yan from T.H.E. Artist Agency. Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist is Kim Gray. The set-up for this shoot is fairly simple, one Profoto Acute2 1200 with a single Acute/D4 head into a beauty dish. High and slightly camera right. From behind the model, left and right: A Hensel Integra [...]
This model for this shoot was Stephanie from Mattison Agency. Kim Gray acted as Makeup Artist and Hairstylist. Malarie Burgess was the fashion stylist for this shoot. The set-up for this shoot is as follows, one Profoto Acute2 1200 with one Acute/D4 head into a beauty dish, a second Acute/D4 head with a snoot onto [...]
A great many people have expounded on that you need to have a polarizer to achieve the best results in landscape photography. Few of those people show why you need a polarizer to get the most out of your landscape work. The theory behind a polarizer is a fairly simply one, you stick one on [...]
Perfect conditions went in to making this shot. The rain had finally let up after hours of pouring down, the clouds were thick, reducing the light levels and giving me gorgeous soft light. No big in camera tricks. A bit of dodge and burn in post, but the colors are as I saw them on [...]
Great Falls State Park is a fun place to shoot at. It offers a lot of beautiful views, not least of which is this centerpiece waterfall, which on this particular day was swollen from rainwater and roaring over the rocks.
The orchid was lit from the side with a softbox and there was a silver reflector behind as he background, the reflector was placed outside the path of the light to avoid creating a big wash from the back. (Sometimes you have to work with what you have, and I did not have another background [...]
Model for this shoot is Sarah from Mattison Agency. Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist was Kim Gray. The lighting in this shot is from a single Profoto Acute/D4 head connected to a Profoto Acute2R 1200 pack. The head had a beauty dish modifier around it and was above and in front of the model. The [...]
Sometimes, taking advantage of harsh sun to get bright reflections in your macros can really bring out the detail in things. Additionally, what seems like it would be a distracting shadow or reflection can be dramatic and interesting at the macro level.
The model here is Laura. The makeup artist was Kim Gray and the hairstylist was Tonya Michelle. The fashion stylist was Malarie Burgess. The lighting for this shoot is a Profoto Acute/D4 head into beauty dish high and right of the camera. There are 2 Profoto Acute/D4 heads into standard zoom reflectors behind to the [...]
This was taken at the National Botanical Gardens. Nothng special here, just the right angle combined with a short DoF from the macro distance.
This shoot was with Juelles, signed by New York Models. Makeup Artist was Carolyn Berry. Hair stylist was JaiFawn Hood. Fashion Stylist Malarie Burgess. The lighting on this shot was a single Profoto Acute2 1200 into a Beauty Dish in front of and to the left of the camera above the model angled down 45 [...]
This shoot was with Juelles, signed by New York Models. Makeup Artist was Carolyn Berry. Hair stylist was JaiFawn Hood. Fashion Stylist Malarie Burgess. The lighting on this shot was one Profoto Acute2 1200R into a beauty dish camera left and high angled down. One Acute2 1200 into a 1′x6′ strip softbox camera right and [...]
I feel as though I lucked in to this particular photograph. I had decided to go to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens in early April, not really sure what I would find. The sky was supposed to be cloudy but it ended up almost completely cloudless. The shade from the mass of flowers on this cherry tree provided [...]
When approaching a macro shot, always try angles from below your target. It requires some work on hands and knees yet, but the results tend to be better than the human standing perspective of above.
My first entries into food shots. These were taken to sell the aforementioned cookies, as I have (engaging in my other passion) begun working with my girlfriend (sometimes fashion stylist) Malarie on a baking oriented food shop through the website etsy.com. The easiest way to take these is definitely to have a nice big open [...]
I have not shot enough since I moved up to NYC. I wanted to move here in part because I want to shoot MORE, and this year is the time to change that funk, and how. This shot is from a fantastic fishmarket, on Canal St. near Mulberry St. The shot below shot is cherries [...]
The second week of 52 project was harder (as expected) than the first. Mostly because it is so damn cold outside right now and I was having trouble getting inspired within my apartment. This photograph of my cast iron pan just before starting to fry some eggs.
This week was a new feeling for me. I went out and photographed with a Mamiya 7II which I just got. I’ve never used a rangefinder before, and it is still a learning experience for me, but so far I am really happy with it. These were all taken with a Mamiya 7II with 80mm [...]
Got this one in under the wire. Travel for work makes it a real challenge to get film shot processed and scanned. I am till really enjoying the Mamiya 7II. This was shot with the Mamiya 7II, 80mm f/4N and Ektachrome 100G film.
My first 4×5 shot for this project. Shot last week, but developing it took more time to figure out timing on then I expected. Hopefully this week will be a bit faster on the draw. This is part of a fountain in Grand Army Plaza near Prospect Park in NYC. I played with depth of [...]
It has been a long time. Too long really since I photographed something and was really happy about the end result. I’ve been dabbling in some large format film here and there, but these two are not film. I wanted to get my digital firmly back in hand before I needed to rely on it [...]
